BIEBERTAL’S MEDICINAL LEECHES

The biology of the medicinal leech

As hermaphrodite annelids, leeches are closely related to the earthworm. They lay eggs in cocoons, and provide the babies with a kind of yolk. Once the babies have hatched and consumed the yolk, they are on their own and head into the water. They feed themselves on blood and fluids from animal tissue. They make a buffet of amphibians, fish, birds and mammals.

COMBINED RESEARCH AND PRACTICE

For many years, we have been collaborating with renowned and innovative clinics and research institutions to get to the bottom of the medicinal leech´s biology and mode of action: Charité Berlin, Klinikum Essen Mitte, Rheumaklinik Bad Endbach, Justus Liebig Universität Gießen JLU, Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen THM, Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt, Leechlab Caen, University of Connecticut, Universität Kassel, Universität Greifswald to name but a few.

We don't just want to sell leeches: we also want to provide therapists with increasingly well-founded knowledge and, through them, inform patients about leeches and the effects of their bite. So if you have any questions, get in touch. If we can’t answer your question ourselves, we probably know an expert who can provide sound, well-founded information.

Only Biebertal leeches are true "Biebertalers”

To be considered as a medicinal product and placed on the market in this capacity within the meaning of the law, leeches must come from a company that is licensed to produce medicines. Of course, here in Biebertal we don’t "manufacture" an effectiveness that the leeches don’t already naturally bring with them. But only leeches that meet the specified criteria offer the high safety standards that are required by law for medicinal products.

We are happy to pass on our knowledge!

For more than 20 years, several times a year Biebertaler Blutgelzucht has been organising basic and advanced seminars on leech therapy for doctors, veterinarians and non-medical practitioners. For several years, our range of seminars has also been supplemented by further topic-specific seminars on other forms of therapy.
